LET me start off by saying, I am NOT a nutritionist. Nor am I a guru of dieting. I can't stick to a diet to save my life (well, maybe if my life depended on it) (and by the way, your life kinda DOES depend upon it!). And keep in mind I am speaking from MY experience and not yours. But one thing is for sure for every body.... Seed Oils are the bane of our existence... and they are in EVERYTHING!!! I used to think high fructose corn syrup was sneakily hidden in everything but seed oils take the cake... and its hidden in that too. Seed oils are literally the hidden in plain sight death trap. They are in almost ALL junk food but even in foods we consider to be "healthy." They are the majority cause of heart disease, inflammatory diseases, gut issues not to mention weight gain, anxiety, brain fog, migraines and a myriad of other illnesses. I personally think they are the root cause of most health issues even down to being more prone to sunburn (my speculation here, not backed up by research... but who would research this? that is another post!). What are seed oils? Some you already know, but others surprised me... Vegetable oil, obvious. As are Canola and Corn oil. But about a year ago I bought Grapeseed oil... sounded healthy to me! Cold pressed and organic! Also, the other two big surprises were Sunflower oil and Safflower oil. These HAVE to be healthy, no? NO! Cottonseed, Palm, Peanut, Rice Bran and Soy oils also on the death trap list. They all "sound" good especially when they are marketed as "Cold Pressed" "Organic" and "Non-GMO." Plus, we've been told these are a healthier alternative to animal fats, like butter. Don't buy it... figuratively or literally! To get into the minutia of why seed oils are bad for you, just use the google machine. Here is one link to get started: How Industrial Seed Oils are Making Us Sick Weston A Price website is a major source of information on health and nutrition. If you are serious about learning, this is a must bookmark. I also started following on Telegram "Eat With Purpose" who REALLY opened my eyes to the evils of PUFA oils. Top photo lifted from that site. Highly recommend a follow there if you are interested in your nutrition and diet! I lost 20 pounds that somehow appeared in my 30's and never seemed to disappear entirely. It didn't matter how much sugar I cut out, how many veggies I ate, but by simply cutting these oils out of my diet I started dropping pounds. I replaced these poisons with a GOOD QUALITY Olive or Avocado oil, BUTTER!!!!, and my favorite, I use bacon fat for everything! Not only have I lost weight without even trying (imagine if I tried!) I have more energy and less hunger. Other options are Ghee, Duck Fat and Tallow are also a tasty option (for us meat eaters. Vegetarians stick with the first two. But that's for another future post!) It is not easy though. Cutting out the "junk" is sorta easy... processed foods, etc. But when you start reading labels these bad oils are everywhere including the HEALTH FOOD section!?!? I engage other shoppers in conversation and mention how detrimental the safflower and sunflower oils are and they think I'm nuts. "Those are healthy oils!" My hat is off to the evil marketing empires that have convinced us and many in the medical field as well, that these oils are a healthier alternative. Reminds me of the vintage ads for cigarettes, "Smoking is good for you and your baby too!" Cringe worthy.
Some places I found these oils in my favorite of favorite things that broke my heart and opened my eyes... I love love loveD (past tense) Perfect bars. My sister turned me onto these as a quick hit to keep you going. I bought them 10 at a time! ...Sunflower oil. Pretty much every cracker on the planet is made with canola or vegetable oil. The "healthy" versions tout sunflower or safflower oil. Look for ones that have olive oil or butter instead. Even then you are dealing with flour (which is of course, another post). In my family Mayo is a big big big one! I grew up in Amish country so mayo in potato salad, macaroni salad, every sandwich. There are mayos that have olive or avocado oil. Don't look at just the label though. Read the ingredients (on EVERYTHING). Avocado oil may be first in line, but then they follow it up with canola and palm. Sneaky. Cookies are another place. If you look at the ingredients very very few have butter as the oil. But yet when I was a kid making cookies, I remember using butter... good, ole' fashioned butter! One of my favorite farm stands in Pennsylvania has the best cookies made with butter and Sucanat. Sugar and flour yes, but its a treat. The other more difficult places to control is eating out. Ask for butter to be substituted in the cooking. I just say I have a sensitivity, which is true.... for ALL of us! Most restaurants will accommodate. I cringe now when I watch food shows that start with vegetable oil to cook....
It takes some getting used too, and you may drive your family crazy...initially. But as they too open their eyes to the slow poisoning we are encouraged to consume in our diets, they will thank you. Especially as they slim down, feel more energetic and alert, and they possibly are able to slowly wean off of a myriad of meds including blood pressure, evil statins, diabetic meds and anti-inflammatories (OBVIOUSLY recommended doing under a doctor supervision. But I recommend finding a doctor who is on the same page about nutrition as you.) You won't miss the meds or the oils. Well,,,, except mom and her mayo... that is a hard one for her.
